10 Tips to Slow Down Your Biological Age

10 Tips to Slow Down Your Biological Age

We all know that we should be eating right, getting enough exercise, and avoiding stress if we want to stay young. But what if you’re already doing all of those things and you’re still not feeling your best? Maybe it’s not your fault – maybe your body is just aging faster than it should.

slow down your biological age

Although age is just a number, it sometimes feels like our chronological age is moving faster than we’d like. While there’s not much we can do about the actual number, there are ways to slow down the aging process and look and feel younger for longer. At Combilytics, we are interested in helping our clients increase life health span and live their best quality of life.

In this blog post, we’ll talk about ways to slow down your biological age and live a longer, healthier life.

Understand the Concept of Biological Age

First things first, let’s talk about what we mean when we say “biological age.” Your chronological age is the number of years you’ve been alive. But your biological age, also known as your epigenetic age, is a measure of how well your body is functioning – both physically and mentally. In other words, it’s a reflection of your health and wellness.

Research from the National Academy of Sciences Journal showed that young people of the same chronological age vary in their biological age long before they reach their “midlife.”

There are a number of factors that can affect your biological age, including lifestyle factors, environmental factors, and genetics. And unfortunately, the aging process is inevitable for all of us. But the good news is that there are things you can do to slow it down, and in many cases, reverse it.

So How Do You Know if You’re Aging Faster Than You Should Be?

One way to find out is to get a “biological age test.” These tests are available from a variety of sources, including online tools and health clinics. They usually involve taking a blood or saliva sample, which is then analyzed for markers of aging.

Learn How to Measure Your Biological Age

Once you understand the concept of biological age, it’s time to learn how to measure it. As we mentioned earlier, one way to do this is with a biological age test.

At Combilytics Corp, we recommend our clients go with what we have found to be the most accurate form of biological age testing – a DNA Methylation test. This test can be done with a simple blood draw and looks for changes at the DNA level that are associated with aging.

We provide a list of tests and testing sites that we deem to be the best options to get these evaluations performed.

What is DNA Methylation?

DNA methylation is a chemical modification of DNA that can silence genes.

Methylation is essential for proper gene function and plays a role in many biological processes, including cell proliferation, development, and aging.

As we age, our DNA becomes increasingly methylated. This process is called “epigenetic aging” and it’s one of the main ways that our cells know to slow down and die.

Fortunately, there is growing evidence that we can control our DNA methylation and, in turn, control our biological age.

What Can You Do to Slow Your Biological Age?

Now that we’ve answered the question “what is biological age?” it’s time to talk about how to hack your biological age.

As we mentioned earlier, there are a number of things you can do to control your DNA methylation and in turn, your biological age. These include:

1. Get Regular Checkups

One of the best ways to keep tabs on your biological age is to get regular checkups with your doctor. These appointments are an opportunity to check in on your overall health, discuss any concerns you may have, and get screenings for conditions that are more common as we age.

For example, your doctor may recommend screenings for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and colon cancer starting at age 50. And if you have a family history of certain diseases, you may need to start these screenings earlier.

But screenings aren’t the only thing you should be doing at your doctor’s appointments. You should also be getting a physical exam and blood work done on a regular basis. These tests can help identify any underlying health issues – even if you’re not experiencing any symptoms.

2. Identify Lifestyle Habits That Are Aging You Prematurely

We all know that certain lifestyle choices can lead to health problems down the road. But did you know that some of these habits can also accelerate the aging process?

For example, research has shown that smoking cigarettes can speed up epigenetic aging. So if you smoke, now is the time to quit.

3. Address Your Diet

The food you eat plays a big role in your overall health – and that includes your biological age.

There are a few key nutrients that are especially important for slowing down the aging process. These include omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin D.

You can get these nutrients from foods like salmon, blueberries, spinach, and mushrooms. Or you can take supplements if you’re having trouble getting enough from your diet.

Certain diet regimens can also help with aging. For example, following a ketogenic diet can increase mitochondrial function.

4. Exercise Regularly

We all know that exercise is good for our health. But did you know that feeling good and keeping your body young with exercise can help slow down the epigenetic clocks?

Studies have shown that regular exercise can improve epigenetic age by reducing DNA – Not getting enough exercise can have the opposite effect and actually speed up epigenetic aging.

Your mitochondria are a hallmark of aging, and come with fatigue, decreased muscle mass and brain function, declining cardiovascular health, and more.

HIIT cardio, increasing your weight-to-cardio ratio, and practicing endurance training have all been shown to help testosterone production, muscle mass, and overall cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular health and blood circulation are very important for your health and bodily functions as you age.

So if you want to keep your biological age in check and not lose muscle, make sure you’re getting enough exercise. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days of the week.

5. Manage Your Stress Levels

Chronic stress can take a toll on your health in a number of ways. And one of the most surprising is that it can actually speed up aging.

When you’re stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. This hormone has been linked to higher levels of inflammation, which can damage DNA and lead to accelerated aging.

That’s why it’s so important to find ways to manage your stress levels. Some stress-relieving techniques that have been shown to help include:

  • yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises
  • getting regular massages
  • taking vacations
  • spending time in nature
  • listening to relaxing music

6. Get a Good Nights Sleep

It’s no secret that getting a good night’s sleep is important for your health. But did you know that it can also help slow down the aging process?

When you sleep, your body repairs itself and gets rid of toxins that can damage cells. So if you’re not getting enough shut-eye, your body isn’t able to repair itself as well.

That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Most adults need at least 7-8 hours per night.

Additionally, not getting the proper amount of good quality sleep can lead to age-related diseases over time – like Alzheimers and Dementia.

7. Reduce Your Exposure to Toxins

There are a number of everyday products that contain toxins that can damage DNA and lead to accelerated aging. These include:

  • cosmetics and personal care products
  • cleaning products
  • pesticides

You can reduce your exposure to these toxins by reading labels carefully and only using products that are safe. You can also look for natural alternatives to the products you use.

8. Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Drinking too much alcohol can damage your liver, heart, and brain – and it can also speed up aging.

Research has shown that people who drink excessively have a higher risk of epigenetic changes that can lead to accelerated aging.

On top of that, when people drink excessively, they are less likely to make smart, health-conscious decisions. An intoxicated person is more likely to reach for junk food late at night or smoke cigarettes. It has also been proven that after a night of drinking, you do not get the good quality sleep that your body needs.

So if you want to keep your biological age in check, it’s important to limit your alcohol consumption.

9. Embrace Anti-Aging Technologies and Treatments

There are a number of anti-aging technologies and treatments available that can help slow down your biological aging. These include:

  • hormone therapy
  • nutritional supplements *
  • anti-aging skin care products

So if you’re looking for ways to stay young and healthy, don’t forget to take advantage of these anti-aging treatments.

*Not all supplements are created equally and there is no one-size-fits-all supplement to reverse aging. It is important to speak with your doctor and research what supplementation is right for you.

10. Use a Supplement Regimen Designed Specifically For You

As you age, your nutritional needs change. And if you’re not getting the right nutrients from your diet, it can lead to accelerated aging.

Buzzwords and viral “quick-fix” supplement solutions flood our social media feeds on a daily basis. It can be hard to filter and discern between what is a marketing ploy and what will actually give you results. That’s why it’s so important to use a supplement regimen designed specifically for you.
